Institute of AI Changes Name to Interparliamentary Forum on Emerging Technologies at UNESCO Global Forum

The Institute of AI plans to change its name to the Interparliamentary Forum on Emerging Technologies from the beginning of 2023.

Speaking at the UNESCO Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination on the 29th November, Institute of AI Director Emma Wright highlighted the latest developments on online harms policy, AI and algorithmic audit provisions. During the event in Mexico, she also outlined the intention to change the name of the Institute to the Interparliamentary Forum on Emerging Technologies (IFET).

Commenting on the change, Emma Wright, said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak with global stakeholders about AI, racism and discrimination at this important UNESCO event. Given the challenges now facing the world and our organisation’s role as a global network of legislators interested in emerging technology regulation, we have decided to change the name to reflect the broadening interests of the legislators who come together to discuss strategic issues through our network.”

Founder and Chair of the Institute of AI, Darren Jones MP, added: “Since launching, we have drawn together an increasing number of legislators from countries around the world. As the network has grown, it has become clear that legislators most value the role we play in operating as a forum where strategic issues relating to tech are discussed. The legislators involved in our network are interested in discussing issues that go beyond AI, which relate to all areas of emerging tech – from Web 3.0 to the metaverse, cyber and other issues. The opportunities and challenges posed by emerging tech are highly complex and having the opportunity to share policy ideas, experience and regulatory best practice will be invaluable.”

Through 2023 IFET will host a number of roundtables featuring high level speakers for legislators from countries around the world, covering a wide range of AI, emerging tech and strategic policy issues. Through the year the organisation will continue its work providing tools to enable legislators to scrutinise legislation on AI and other emerging tech areas.
